MUMBAI (AFP) — Bollywood action hero Akshay Kumar was arrested Monday on suspicion of obscene behaviour during a recent fashion show in Mumbai, police said.
A complaint had been lodged against Kumar and his wife, Twinkle Khanna, after she was photographed unbuttoning a pair of jeans that the actor was modelling on the catwalk at the Lakme Fashion Week in March.
"I can confirm that Akshay Kumar came to Vakola police station (in Mumbai) at 8:30 am with his lawyer and surrendered himself," assistant commissioner of police Arvind Mahdadi told AFP.
"He was arrested under section 294 of Indian Penal Code and was given bail."
Khanna was arrested and bailed last month.
Kumar, 41, has said he did not mean to cause any offence by his actions and apologised.
The arrest came as he returned to India after filming abroad.
"The news blew up when I was away," he joked in an interview with the Hindustan Times newspaper published Monday.
"I just want to make it home from the airport without my car being egged by all those who have never been unbuttoned by their wives."
Kumar was recently seen in the first Hindi-language film to be shot on location in China, "Chandni Chowk to China," which was poorly received by audiences and critics
