Telangana News: Telangana India's 29th State

Telangana, 29th state?

Announcement done by Govt of India in 2009 about Telangana may come action today after lots of ups and downs. Today, 30th July can be another day in the history of AP after Telangana was merged with Andhra state to form Andhra Pradesh state in 1956.

Lots of people may not know about from where Telanagana word emerged. Actually it is thought to have been derived from Trilinga, as in Trilinga Desa, "the country of the three lingas". According to a Hindu legend, Shiva descended as linga on three mountains namely, Kaleshwaram, Srisailam and Draksharama, which marked the boundaries of the Telangana.

The Telangana region comprises 10 districts: Hyderabad, Adilabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Rangareddy, and Warangal.

The major problem is who will retain Hyderabad which is major revenue generator for the state due to IT industry. Geographically it should go with Telangana but major investment is done by AP. So AP is not willing to lose it. Now  the city with its booming economy powered largely by the IT industry, will be a shared capital for Andhra Pradesh and the new Telangana state.

Today if decision comes for new state, it will mark the beginning of the process of creating a new state a decade after the birth of Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.

Other such demands that are pending are:

Bodoland
The Assam government signed the agreement for a Bodoland Territorial Council in 2003 and Hagrama Mohillary was sworn in as Chief of the 46-member council

Harit Pradesh
Demands for a separate state of Harit Pradesh to be carved out of western Uttar Pradesh made by the RLD. The SP is opposed to the demand.

Mithila
Since several Indian states were made on the basis of language, there is a demand that Mithila should also be recognised with Darbhanga as capital. There are 24 Maithili speaking districts in Bihar and six in Jharkhand.

Purvanchal
BSP chief Mayawati had proposed a separate Purvanchal state with Awadhi, Bhojpuri and Baghelkhand regions.

Gorkhaland
The movement for a separate state of Gorkhaland gained momentum during the 1980s.

  1. Thanks for the info. It's belated decision. Had they taken it long back, they would have avoided loss of many human lives and damage to public properties. Better late than never.
